This project began in response to a design competition which aimed to create a new concept for the use of public spaces within the small town of Umbertide in Umbria. The project site was very challenging as it has many historical buildings which are located in particularly awkward positions. It was envisaged that the redesign would make the most of these limitations and work with them to solve the problems of traffic circulation whilst at the same time creating safe and accessible public spaces. The main concept chosen by our team, worked by creating a three dimensional solution, disparate areas could be connected by raised thoroughfares, which also created additional spaces for public recreation and general use. The resulting design meant the historic buildings are interconnected by a network of layers and which support new commercial activities, lending the old historic centre a whole new functionality, look and perspective.
